A Wells County teen has died after being shot in the head during what appeared to be a gun-cleaning accident, according to the Indiana State Police.

The 18-year old victim was cleaning guns with his 19-year-old friend Saturday afternoon at a home just outside Markle.

As the 19-year-old was handling a handgun, it fired a .45-caliber bullet that struck the 18-year-old in the head, police said.

The victim was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery. He died from his injuries Sunday afternoon at the hospital, police said.

The shooting appears to be an accident, and no arrests have been made, police said. The Wells County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police are investigating.

The names of the men have not been released.
