College basketball preview: IPFW at Oakland

When: 6 p.m. today

Where: Rochester, Mich.

Records: IPFW 14-16, 6-9 Summit League; Oakland 16-14, 10-5

Radio: 1380 AM

IPFW leaders: Frank Gaines (19.4 ppg), Mario Hines (5.8 rpg), Pierre Bland (2.8 apg)

Oakland leaders: Travis Bader (22.3 ppg), Corey Petros (8.2 rpg), Duke Mondy (5.2 apg)

Key matchup: IPFW ended the Grizzlies’ seven-game winning streak at Memorial Coliseum, 77-71 on Feb. 20. Even though Oakland’s Bader, the league’s second-leading scorer, had 23 points against the Mastodons, he was only 2 of 10 from behind the three-point line. The Grizzlies are 10-1 at home this season and should get a better outside-shooting performance from their junior guard.

The skinny: This could be the middle round of a three-game set between IPFW and Oakland, since there’s a strong likelihood they will play in the opening round of the Summit League tournament that begins next Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. IPFW, which brings a four-game winning streak into the game, outscored Oakland 24-2 via the bench in its previous win. Five Mastodons scored in double figures – Gaines had 17, Luis Jacobo, 15, Joe Reed, 14, Joe Edwards, 11, and Hines, 10.
