Key matchup: Two of the Big Easts top point guards will be on display today with the Irishs Atkins, a 6-foot-2 junior, and the Golden Eagles Cadougan, a 6-1 senior, square off. Atkins is fourth in the conference in assists in the Big East, and he averages 12.2 points. Cadougan is 10th in the Big East in assists, and he averages 8.6 points.
The skinny: Notre Dame is coming off its second six-day break between games in a row, and the Irish have won their last two games after defeating Cincinnati 62-41 at home Sunday. Marquette has been off for five days after it upset No. 12 Syracuse 74-71 Monday at home. Irish guard Scott Martin had season-ending knee surgery Wednesday. He had missed the last nine games, and Notre Dame went 7-2 without him.
