Homestead team wins Rube Goldgerg contest in Ohio

Homestead High School's science club received first place in a Rube Goldberg contest at COSI in Columbus, Ohio Saturday. The contest is designed to encourage critical thinking and problem solving in a non-traditional learning environment. Winning teams use physics, engineering, humor and story-telling.

Members of Homestead High School's Rube Goldberg team are: Brooke Adams (team captain), Parker Angelos, Daniel Clark, Natalie Hawken, Jason Ivanovic, Weishan Liao, Wei-Lin Liao, Melissa Marks, Stephen Mattson, Anna Tatara and Jeremy Tatara. They competed against 16 teams from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and their machine, Space Exploration, will now advance to the national competition.

The Rube Goldberg competition originally started at Purdue University in 1949, inspired by Rube Goldberg cartoons. This year's task involved hammering a nail using a minimum of 20 steps in less than two minutes.
