The body of Thomas Haskins was a day away from being cremated – and his closest kin didn’t even know he was dead.A Huntington woman was charged Thursday in the November death of another woman who had high levels of morphine and other drugs in her system.
Christy D. Oden, 40, is charged with reckless homicide and three counts of dealing controlled substances in the death of Annette Veach.
According to court documents, Oden had prescriptions for oxycodone, oxycontin, oxymorphone, opana and morphine sulfate. She is accused of dealing oxycodone, morphine and oxymorphone to Veach, 39, who was found dead in a Roanoke home Nov. 25.
According to Huntington County Coroner Philip S. Zahm, Veach's death was caused by high levels of morphine in her system. Veach also tested positive for oxycodone and oxymorphone, Zahm said.
Oden told police that she and Veach had been drinking at a bar until about 3 a.m. when they went to a home in the 800 block of North Main Street in Roanoke. Veach had finished several drinks while at the bar, Oden told police.
She told investigators Veach had two white pills with her at the bar and they were going to snort them when they arrived in Roanoke.
What happened when the two women arrived at the home was unclear from police reports, but two men were also in the home throughout the evening.
Both men and Oden told police that drugs were present in the home before Veach's death.
The next day the two men found Veach unconscious and not breathing and called for police, court documents said.
When police arrived about 12:45 p.m. Nov. 25, they found Veach lying in on the floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene, court records said.
Oden was released after posting bail Thursday, according to jail officers.
