Canterbury turns to defense to defeat Blackhawk

Canterbury advanced to tonight’s Class A Hamilton Sectional semifinals with a 53-44 victory over Blackhawk Christian.

The Cavaliers (13-8) will face Bethany Christian (4-17) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Canterbury defeated Bethany 65-51 during the regular season.

Canterbury trailed 23-21 after the first half, but the Cavaliers were able to lock down defensively to top the Braves (7-16).

“Blackhawk and Canterbury is a great rivalry game, and the game was closer than the final score,” Canterbury coach Scott Kreiger said in a phone interview. “Our guys had a terrific defensive effort in the second half.”

Trent Van Horn scored 23 for Canterbury, and Andrew Kus added 11.

Riley Reimschisel scored 22 for Blackhawk, and Joey Morlan added 11.

BETHANY CHRISTIAN 49, LAKELAND CHRISTIAN 36: Zarek Finley scored 18 points as the Cougars (7-15) were eliminated from postseason play.

Class 2A

LaVILLE 58, FREMONT 42: Tyler Jenkins scored 16 points for the Eagles (12-9), who were eliminated from the Westview Sectional. Andrew Hostetler scored 18 for the Lancers (16-6).
