PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Stephen Strasburg had a rocky return to the mound in his first outing since the Washington Nationals shut him down last September to protect his arm.
Strasburg gave up a single and a full-count homer to the first two batters he faced Saturday, and the New York Mets beat Washington 5-3 in a spring training opener. Strasburg also gave up a two-out double to Marlon Byrd in the first but ended a 29-pitch inning by striking out Lucas Duda.
Jeter does on-field running drills
Yankees captain Derek Jeter practiced on-field running and agility drills for the first time since breaking his ankle last fall in the AL championship series opener against Detroit on Oct. 1.
Jays’ OFs shaken up
Toronto outfielders Mike McCoy and Ryan Langerhans were both shaken up after colliding on a flyball in the Blue Jays game against Detroit. They both stayed down for a bit, and other Toronto fielders quickly went out to check on them.
Around the camps
Luis Valbuena homered to help the Cubs beat a Los Angeles Angels split squad 11-2. Alejandro De Aza hit a leadoff single in the first and later scored on the first of two doubles by Alex Rios as the White Sox defeated the Dodgers 9-0.
