Frank Gaines scored 13 points in the first half to pace IPFW to a 36-33 lead over Oakland on Wednesday at Memorial Coliseum.
Gaines, who came into the game needing 36 points to become the school's all-time leading scorer in men's hoops, got off to a quick start by scoring 13 of the Mastodons' first 25 points. But the 6-foot-4 senior didn't score a point in the final eight minutes.
IPFW held a 36-25 lead when Mario Hines scored from close range after a dump pass from Joe Edwards. But Oakland closed out with an 8-0 run.
Travis Bader leads the Grizzlies with 10 points.
