‘Mortal’ injuries on baby lead to arrest

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis man faces a preliminary murder charge in the weekend death of his girlfriend’s 4-month-old daughter.

Twenty-year-old Jared Tapley was arrested Saturday on the preliminary charge. He remained jailed without bond Monday at the Marion County Jail.

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/Vpz8bo) the infant, Nichole Williams, was taken Thursday to Riley Hospital for Children after she stopped breathing. Indianapolis medics resuscitated the child on the way to the hospital, but she died there Saturday afternoon.

Police said homicide detectives learned of “suspicious, and ultimately mortal, injuries” on the baby, but did not release additional details.

An autopsy on the child has been scheduled for Tuesday.
