Eyeing IU

Crean seeks clarification

Indiana coach Tom Crean made some waves Monday morning when he asked a question during the Big Ten coaches' teleconference.

Crean asked the call's moderator about the criteria for naming the conference's player of the week.

Michigan guard Trey Burke was named the player of the week after averaging 23.5 points last week.

Crean's point of contention seemed to be that the player of the week was on a team that suffered a blowout loss. The Wolverines lost to Michigan State 75-52 last Tuesday.

Indiana won both of its games last week, defeating Nebraska 76-47 and Purdue 83-55. But the No. 1 Hoosiers didn't have the player of the week or the freshman of the week, which went to Michigan State's Gary Harris.

"Can you give the criteria, so I can understand this once and for all what the criteria is for the player of the week," Crean said. "What are you guys judging that on?"

When Crean was told that he would be emailed the explanation, the coach asked another question.

"Just give me this, where does winning fit into it?" Crean said.

Crean was told that winning is part of the criteria.

"OK, that helps me," Crean said.

Crean did post a message on his Twitter account to clarify why he was inquiring on what the player of the week criteria is in the Big Ten.

"From the BT teleconfrence, let me be clear. I was not questioning a player. I was questioning the criteria for choosing an award," Crean wrote.
