Dad convicted in accidental shooting of Ohio boy

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (AP) — A judge has found a central Ohio man responsible for the death of his 3-year-old son, who accidentally shot himself in the head with his father's loaded handgun.

A judge convicted 25-year-old Joshua Heagren on Monday of child endangering and negligent homicide. He could face up to three years in prison when he's sentenced later.

Authorities say Lucas Heagren found the loaded .45-caliber handgun under a couch in the family home in Mt. Vernon and shot himself last May.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that photos presented by prosecutors of Joshua Heagren showing his son how to shoot a gun were critical to the case.

Heagren testified he normally kept the handgun under his mattress, but he had slipped it under the couch because he planned to go shooting later.
