Area recovery gaining traction, report finds

A new jobs and investment report issued today shows northeast Indiana’s recovery is gaining traction, officials said.

John Stafford, director of the Community Research Institute at IPFW, described 2012 as a strong year for growth in the 10-county region.

“The continued number and quality of ‘upside’ events is encouraging,” he said in a statement. “Perhaps as significant is the absence of many major ‘downside’ events over the past three years, including 2012.”

The Northeast Indiana 2012 Business Dynamics Report counted 10 net new employer announcements totaling 763 new jobs for the region.

The study records only public announcements made by industries including manufacturing, logistics, defense, insurance and health care. The report is not meant to be a complete picture of the region’s economic activity.

Even so, the results pleased local officials, including John Sampson, president and CEO of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, which commissioned the report from the Community Research Institute.

“Northeast Indiana had a very good year in capital investment and job creation for 2012 despite considerable uncertainty in the national economy,” Sampson said in a statement.
