Girl, 11, goes missing from home

– Fort Wayne police searched a south-side neighborhood late into the night, hoping to find an 11-year-old girl who went missing Sunday afternoon.

The girl, Dashanique Upchurch, walked away from her home in the 3100 block of South Hanna Street about 1 p.m., said officer Raquel Foster, a police spokeswoman.

Upchurch, a student at Northwood Middle School, left home by herself after a family disturbance, Foster said.

Police, with help from firefighters, were canvassing the area surrounding Upchurch's home, which sits across from Weisser Park, but as of 11 p.m., the girl was still missing.

Upchurch was described as about 5-foot-2, 120 pounds and black. She has brown eyes, black-and-blue braided hair, pierced ears and a scar on her left ankle. She was last seen wearing a purple plaid jacket, blue jeans and black boots.

About 8:30 p.m., authorities activated a system that sent automated messages to neighborhood residents, alerting them that the girl was missing and instructing them to call police if they come across her.
