A Mentone man was arrested on multiple charges this weekend after a short foot chase through yards at Palestine Lake, according to a statement issued by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies and Claypool officers were sent to the area about 7 p.m. Saturday in an attempt to serve two active warrants on Matthew Dillan Mahaska, 20.

They reported finding him walking along County Road 600 West near Blue Jay Drive with several stolen items.

After being handcuffed, tried to run, the sheriff's department statement said. It said officers chased him through several yards before catching him near the officers' squad cars.

In addition to the warrants on charges of theft and failure to appear, the sheriff's department said Mahaska now faces preliminary charges of resisting/fleeing law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Mahaska was being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on $17,500 bond.
