Last book read and what you thought of it: “The Lacuna” by Barbara Kingsolver. I read it because I loved her book, “The Poisonwood Bible,” but I didn’t care for this novel.

Favorite teaching memory: There are so many, but the one thing they all have in common is there is a magical moment when a student who has struggled with something very challenging finally succeeds, and the rest of the class cheers when they witness it.

Nomination: “Mrs. Alt is an enthusiastic teacher and a positive person. When she is coaching her speech team she guides and inspires her students to achievement levels they didn’t think possible. Going above and beyond the normal school day hours is par for the course with Mrs. Alt. On speech competition Saturdays, she is packing supplies, fielding questions, passing out encouragement and this is all before 6 a.m. When the competition is over and the bus returns to school 12 hours later, she still has her engaging smile on while she unpacks the bus and sends the students on their way home. During her prep periods, she is teaching extemporaneous speakers how to prepare, going over speeches and listening to students practice their speech. We feel she truly deserves recognition for a job exceptionally well done!”
Recognitions
•Area high school students Benjamin Eichhorn, Bellmont; Karly Gotschall, Homestead; Maria Schafer, Bishop Dwenger and Frank Vandeputte, Bishop Dwenger have been awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship, beginning this fall. Evans Scholars are golf caddies who were selected based on four criteria: a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.
Registration
•Northwest Allen County Schools is taking names of students who wish to enroll in kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year. If you have a child who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1, call the school your child will attend prior to kindergarten round up, which will be at 6 p.m. March 19 for all NACS elementary schools. Parents should bring a county birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency (such as a utility bill) and any legal or custodial papers pertaining to your child.
Scholarships
•Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program is accepting nominations through March 15 for kids ages 6-18 who have made a positive impact on their communities. The organization will give out more than $425,000 in scholarships and prizes. To submit a nomination, visit kohlskids.com
Indiana Tech
•Indiana Tech is accepting applications for the university’s Presidential Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship for the traditional day program at the Fort Wayne campus.
The selection criteria emphasize leadership experience, and preference may be given to candidates who have established contributions within the Fort Wayne community, especially within the East Central neighborhood. •IPFW is recruiting high-tech startup companies to participate in the Purdue University systemwide Interns for Indiana program, which assists startup companies by matching them with high quality undergraduate student interns.

Trine
High school juniors and seniors who plan to study engineering are invited to Trine University’s Engineering Visit Day on Feb. 18. The special visit day coincides with National Engineer’s Week, Feb. 17-23. Prospective students will get a chance to learn about Trine’s nationally recognized engineering program and various types of engineering fields of study offered at Trine.
