Irish in Big East 1 more season, Brey says

SOUTH BEND – Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey says the Fighting Irish will stay in the Big East for the 2013-14 season before leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Notre Dame announced in September it was leaving the Big East to join the ACC, with its football program remaining independent. Big East bylaws require 27 months’ notice from departing members, but athletic director Jack Swarbrick indicated he would at least talk to the Big East about the possibility of leaving early.

Brey said one reason Notre Dame decided to remain in the Big East another season is it believes the seven Catholic schools that have decided to leave and form their own league will remain in the Big East next season.

Big East associate commissioner John Paquette declined comment Thursday.
