‘Life of Pi’ takes top visual effects honor

The Visual Effects Society on Tuesday honored Oscar hopefuls with some of its top awards.

“Life of Pi” won for visual effects in an effects-driven feature, animated character in a live-action feature, FX and simulation animation in a live-action feature and compositing in a feature.

“The Avengers” won awards for created environment in a live-action feature and models in a feature.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” won for virtual cinematography in a live-action feature.

The films are nominated in the Academy Awards’ visual effects category alongside “Prometheus” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.”

Other top film awards went to “The Impossible” for supporting visual effects and “Brave” for animation.
