ROME CITY – The Noble County Farm Bureau has donated $1,000 toward the restoration and renovation of the historic Sower Farm near Rome City. John Bry, community asset development coordinator for the Noble County Convention & Visitors Bureau, accepted the check Jan. 31 at the farm.
The visitors bureau has leased the farmhouse from the State of Indiana to create a hub for its Farm to Fork program. The Sower farmhouse and property will be used for Farm to Fork tours, a central farmers market, educational gardens and other related purposes. Students from Goshen College and its Merry Lea Environmental Center at Wolf Lake completed a business plan for the Sower Farm with the visitors bureau in December.
The visitors bureau is partnering with Indiana Landmarks for the renovation, with work expected to begin in April. The farmhouse exterior will be restored to its historic appearance that includes replicating missing ornamental woodwork, reconstruction of a missing front porch, window repair, removal of aluminum siding and painting the home in historic colors.
