More than six months after a fire shut down Chung King Express, 3101 N. Anthony Blvd., the carry-out and drive-thru Chinese restaurant had its grand re-opening Monday.
Employees were not at the restaurant when the fire started in July, owner Linh Huynh says, so they don’t know what caught fire or how it began, but the building did have to undergo renovations because of damage.
Chung King didn’t make any changes to the menu, she adds, and customers can expect the same food and service they were accustomed to before the fire.
Opening, moving
•The Redwood Firewood Grill and Bar, 2604 Shelden St. in Warsaw, is hosting a free grand opening event from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday. It will feature a craft beer sampling, hors d’oeuvres from the restaurant’s menu and more.
The restaurant opened about three weeks ago, bartender Laura Kats says, and so far, the best-sellers have been the porterhouse and 16-ounce rib-eye steaks.
Kats calls the Redwood specialties steak and pasta, and she says everything, including the pasta, is made fresh.
•Harlan Donuts, 11911 Water St. in Harlan, is in the process of remodeling. It will close its current location and open a quarter-mile away, at 16247 Indiana 37.
The new shop will provide more space and put it in a better location, manager Kelly Stapleton says. Ideally, the change will happen at the end of May.
Student dinner specials
•This semester’s students in Ivy Tech’s bakery merchandising course will open their weekly deli today. Kelty’s Kafé – named in memory of Chef Bob Kelty, who died in August 2011 – will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays. The menu will change each week as students cycle through the opportunity to be head chef. Today’s menu will feature a grilled ham and cheese panini with soup or salad, plus a variety of bakery and pastry items.
The café is at Ivy Tech Community College Northeast, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd.
•Students in Ivy Tech’s special cuisines class start their semester-long dinner series Thursday at the Northeast campus, 3800 N. Anthony Blvd. The menu changes each week, and Thursday’s buffet will feature Italian dishes.
The buffet is open Thursdays through May 2, with none planned March 14, 21 and 28. To make reservations, which are required, call 480-2002. Each meal is $20.
Holiday events
•Deer Park Irish Pub, 1530 Leesburg Road, is holding its annual Mardi Gras celebration at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Big John’s Rajin’ Cajun food truck will be set up.
The event will feature a variety of musicians. There is no cover.
