Penn State leaders: Tim Frazier (16.3 ppg); Ross Travis (6.8 rpg); D.J. Newbill (4 apg)
Key matchup: The Nittany Lions will need to slow down Hammons, the Boilermakers 7-foot center, who was named Big Ten freshman of the week after averaging 24.5 points and nine rebounds in losses to Indiana and Northwestern last week. Purdue will need to contain Penn States Jermaine Marshall, a 6-4 junior guard, and Newbill, a 6-4 sophomore guard. Marshall is fifth in the Big Ten in scoring (15.7 ppg), and Newbill is sixth (15.6).
The skinny: Purdue will be without guard Dru Anthrop, who has a broken bone in his left hand. Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said the senior, who has played in 14 games, will miss a couple of weeks. The Boilers are trying to end a two-game losing streak, while the Lions have lost nine in a row. Purdue won the first meeting against Penn State this season 60-42 Jan. 13.
