Bishop Emeritus John M. D'Arcy will be remembered over three days this week with opportunities for public visitation in both South Bend and Fort Wayne.
Diocesan officials announced the funeral arrangements for D'Arcy on Monday. The retired bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend died from cancer Sunday in Fort Wayne.
The three days of events will culminate at noon Friday with a funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1122 S. Clinton St.
Events begin Wednesday in South Bend, after D'Arcy's body is transported to St. Matthew's Cathedral, 1701 Miami St. Public visitation in South Bend begins at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with a rosary recited at 5 p.m.
A Mass of Transferral will be conducted by the diocese's current bishop, the Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades, before the body is returned to Fort Wayne.
On Thursday, D'Arcy's body will be formally received at the Cathedral. Morning prayer and visitation will begin at 10 a.m. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m., with evening prayer at 7 p.m.
Visitation at the Cathedral will continue from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
Diocese officials said D'Arcy's interment will be conducted privately, with only family members in attendance.
He will be interred in Fort Wayne, in the crypt beneath the Cathedral, where the first four diocesan bishops – Bishops John Henry Luers, Joseph Dwenger, Joseph Rademacher and Henry Joseph Alerding – are laid to rest.
