Aldersgate meals are on Thursdays
Thank you so much for your coverage of the meals programs at the various churches throughout Fort Wayne (Jan. 31). This was so helpful both to those who provide them and, more importantly, to those who need them.
To clarify, the Me-N’-U Community meal is served at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (2417 Getz Road) between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

Power of ballot box must drive gun debate
Guns don’t kill, people do. I understand the sentiment, but a gun makes it a lot easier – and a semiautomatic weapon with many rounds of ammunition has made too many massacres possible.
Let’s be honest here. There are restrictions on guns now. You can’t go out and buy a machine gun or a rocket-propelled grenade launcher for personal use. There are reasonable restrictions on all rights. The question is: Where do you draw the line?
None of the president’s proposals threaten the Second Amendment. President Obama is recommending we draw the line this side of high-grade military-style weapons, huge ammunition clips and armor-piercing bullets.
I have heard National Rifle Association officials quizzed several times lately on why private citizens need such weapons, and they have dodged the question each time.
The only logic I have heard other than it is “fun,” is a few letter writers implying we need such guns to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. That turns the whole idea of “Support our Troops” on its head.
We need guns to effectively kill them? If you think our armed forces would take part in enslaving our population, you need to turn off the talk radio shows and get a grip on reality.
Yes, it will be hard to get any restrictions passed because of the corrosive power of money from gun manufacturers and gun lobbies.
But if our legislators know they will be voted out if they don’t pass reasonable laws, they will come around. That’s what democracy is all about.

Today’s liberals unlike those of yesteryear
In the Losers section of the Jan. 26 Weekly Scorecard, in denigrating the position of the Franklin County commissioners, our area’s supposed liberal bastion, The Journal Gazette, actually cited the supremacy clause. Anyone see the irony in that?
The liberals of my youth would have fought against that clause, not used it to support their policies.
Of course, today’s liberals – including those who manage The Journal Gazette editorial page – are not the liberals of my youth.
