The Week Ahead

Curtis Smith

New month, same cold

January is the coldest month of the year, but February is right behind it. In fact, it is at this point of the year that I often hear people long for spring. The lack of sunshine and the persistent cold air has a way of getting to you over time.

Every once in a while, February can be the turning point toward milder air. Although it usually happens in March, the first 70-degree day of the year has occurred times in February.

Interestingly, those three dates came in a five-year span – Feb. 11, 1999, Feb. 25, 2000, and Feb. 27, 1996. Those are the only February days to ever make it into the 70s.

Weather wise: There is no sign of this February bringing that kind of warmth, but it does look like highs reaching the 40s could be a fairly regular occurrence this month.
