Police dog found safe in Allen after 8-mile adventure

Stryker

After a 19-hour adventure and about eight miles of walking, a Columbia City police dog that escaped from his kennel Tuesday was discovered Wednesday morning in Allen County, police said.

Stryker, a 6-year-old brindle-colored Dutch shepherd, went missing after he somehow escaped from his kennel in Collins about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Stryker is used for detecting drugs and tracking, Police Chief Tim Longenbaugh said.

About 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, police received a call that a dog matching Stryker’s description had wandered into a woman’s yard on Hathaway Road.

“She called 911 and secured the dog until an Allen County deputy arrived,” Longenbaugh said.

By Wednesday afternoon, Striker had been returned to his home in Collins, a community northeast of Columbia City. The dog was uninjured and in good health, despite his long trek, Longenbaugh said.

“We believe he was about eight miles from home,” he said. “It was a long night for him.”
