Notebook: Zeller, Hammons continue to impress

WEST LAFAYETTE – The battle between Indiana's Cody Zeller and Purdue's A.J. Hammons was one of the more interesting matchups of Wednesday's game.

Zeller had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the 97-60 win.

"He's going to be very good, there's no doubt about that," Indiana coach Tom Crean said of Hammons. "And I thought Cody had an excellent night."

Hammons finished with a career-high 30 points.

"He's a big body," Zeller said. "I wasn't too focused on the matchup between me and him. I just tried not to foul. He's a big body. He played well."

Coach talk

Purdue coach Matt Painter credited Indiana for doing the "dirty work."

"They are chasing long rebounds, chasing loose balls, playing physical. Just a tough, hard-nosed basketball team. And then you throw the skill on top of it, with making threes and making their free throws," Painter said. "They just have a lot of weapons."

Crean talked about the respect he has for the Boilermakers.

"The respect for Purdue, the respect for Matt, the players, it brings it a little bit more to the table," Crean said. "The rivalry is big, but I think the respect level that you play with, knowing that you have to be on top of your game to not only compete, but win, against a team like that is really high."

Road warriors

Indiana improved to 4-0 in road Big Ten games this year.

"To win here you have to be on top of your game," Crean said. "It's not just the offensive and defensive execution, it's the attitude, the energy, the mental toughness."
