Man struck on I-69 in critical condition

A man is in critical condition after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to direct traffic away from a crash on Interstate 69 Sunday night, police said.

About 7:45 p.m. Sunday, a Nissan SUV was traveling north on I-69, south of the Illinois Road interchange, when the driver temporarily lost control on the ice-covered highway and slid into the center median, said Sgt. Mark Brooks, a police spokesman.

The SUV came to a stop in the middle of the interstate across several lanes, Brooks said.

There were three people in the vehicle at the time of the crash, but no one was injured, Brooks said.

Shortly after the crash, a man driving a Chevy Equinox stopped and attempted to assist the driver of the SUV by directing traffic around the accident.

The man was struck by a Chrysler Town & Country minivan and was transported to a hospital in critical condition, Brooks said.

Brooks said it appears that the driver didn’t see the man.

No other injuries were reported at the scene, but traffic on I-69 northbound near the Illinois Road exit was restricted to one lane for at least three hours.
