Peru school art collection displayed in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE – An Indiana high school’s collection of paintings by artists including Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet is being displayed at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art.

More than 50 pieces collected by 1913 Peru High School graduate G. David Thompson are included in the “Hidden Treasures” exhibit.

Museum executive director Charles Shepard tells television station WANE that Thompson began buying art while leading steel companies in the 1940s. He decided to donate the pieces to his alma mater after becoming frustrated by negotiations with some potential sellers.

Shepard says many of the works can’t be found anywhere else.

The paintings will be on display at the museum until Feb. 24. Peru High School is building a gallery on its campus so it can display the collection permanently.
