Boilers name OC/QB coach

John Shoop, a former offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, was hired as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Purdue.

Shoop most recently was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina. He worked at the school from 2007 to 2011.

He spent 12 seasons in the NFL, starting as an offensive quality control assistant in Carolina in 1995-96. Shoop was the quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers in 1997-98 and had the same role with the Bears in 1999-2000. He was Chicago’s offensive coordinator in 2001-03. He was the quarterbacks coach in Tampa in 2004. He then joined Oakland’s staff, where he was the quarterbacks coach in 2005 and tight ends coach in 2006.

“Coach Shoop is a great guy and a smart coach that understands the team culture we’re building at Purdue,” Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said in a statement. “He has a ton of experience at the highest levels of football, having served as an offensive coordinator in both the NFL and college.

“I love what his knowledge and expertise brings to Purdue, but I really value his notion of family and team-building that will play a vital role for us.”
