Students: The National Center for Education Statistics announces that the graduation rate for the Class of 2010 was 78 percent – the highest since 1974.

Airline passengers: Transportation Safety Administration announces it will stop using the much-maligned and intrusive full-body X-ray machines by June 1. Good riddance.

Richard Lugar: The former U.S. senator will join Indiana University’s new School of Global and International Studies, joining former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton to give the school two of the nation’s most accomplished and respected experts on foreign policy. Lugar will also give his Senate archive to the Herman B Wells Library at IU.

Hillary Rodham Clinton: In her last appearance before Congress as secretary of state, the former first lady takes no grief from Republican senators trying to blame her for the fatal attack on the ambassador to Libya and three of his staff members.

Tossups

Prince Harry: Technically third in line to the British throne, his royal status did not stop him from serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan as a helicopter pilot. But his blunt acknowledgement of having killed enemies draws criticism from fellow Brits plus concern his comments could make him an even bigger target for terrorists.

Losers

Franklin County commissioners: Meeting in Brookville, the commissioners pass a local ordinance exempting themselves from federal gun control laws that, in their opinion, violate the Second Amendment. Such an ordinance is in itself counter to Article XI of the U.S. Constitution, the supremacy clause.

Labor unions: Only 11.3 percent of the workforce are union members – the lowest since 1916.

Meth makers: Bloomington police arrest a couple after finding an active meth lab in their home – along with four children, ages 5 months to 4 years. Disgusting and extremely dangerous.

Milestones

Har-bowl: For the first time in its 47-year history, the teams in the Super Bowl have brothers as head coaches – Jim Harbaugh (San Francisco) and John Harbaugh (Baltimore).

U.S. military: Pentagon lifts ban on women in combat, opening up 200,000 new jobs to women.

Blue II: Butler’s 8-year-old English bulldog mascot will retire at the end of the basketball season – the Final Four in Atlanta, university officials hope. An understudy, Butler Blue III, is in waiting.
