Carroll's team shines

Carroll won't be able to go head-to-head in a team dual format after winning its own wrestling sectional Saturday, but it might be able to see how it fares against some of the other top teams in the state after all.

The IHSAA did away with the decade-and-a-half team tournament, so the Chargers won't advance as a team.

But with 14 individuals making it to next week's Carroll Regional, the Chargers could qualify for the Indiana Wrestling Coaches Association's unofficial class state tournament next season, which is supposed to take the place of the dual team state tourney.

"It is a little disappointing," Carroll coach Scott Raypole said. "You would like to see how you could stack up against the other teams. We definitely want our shot.

"Looking forward, qualifying all 14 guys for regionals maybe we can pick up enough points for next year's coaches' team state. That's what we put in their head. We are not just wrestling for individual sectionals or team sectionals, but also for next year's team and guys who are coming back next year."
