Ohio man charged with shooting 2 while boy hides

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Dayton police say a convicted sex offender fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and another man while the woman's 10-year-old son hid upstairs.

Police said 34-year-old Harvey Lee Jones killed the two people at an apartment early Thursday. The boy saw his mother shot and was able to run out to a neighbor's residence and call 911.

The Dayton Daily News identified the victims as 32-year-old Carly Hughley and 29-year-old Demetrius Beckwith. Jones was arrested later Thursday at another home.

Police said Jones is a registered sex offender with an extensive criminal history. He got out of prison in March after serving time for attempted rape and aggravated burglary.

The motive for the shooting wasn't clear, but police said Jones and Hughley had a previous relationship.
