Animal control officials are looking for information about an injured puppy that was found this month.

The puppy, suffering two broken legs, was found by a passer-by in the 700 block of 3rd Third Street on Jan. 5, said Peggy Bender, community relations and education specialist at Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control.

The dog is a terrier mix and appears to be about a year old or younger, Bender said.

The "good Samaritan" who found the injured canine took him to the Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency Specialty Hospital in Fort Wayne.

At the hospital, veterinarians found that the dog's injuries were inconsistent with having been struck by a car, Bender said.

"There were no abrasions," she said.

Both front leg bones were broken in the same spot, she said.

"It could have been an accident, or it could have been deliberate," Bender said.

The dog underwent surgery, where doctors repaired the bones with plates and pins, Bender said.

The dog is staying with a foster family during a recuperation period.

Animal control officials said they are actively canvassing the neighborhood where the dog was found, looking for clues as to who owned the puppy.

According to Bender, the dog will require more X-rays and post-operative care, and the shelter is seeking donations to restore the Angel Fund, which was nearly depleted after paying for the puppy's surgery.

The puppy will remain in foster care for six to eight weeks until he is fully healed, she said.
