Steel plant worker injured after arm crushed in press

A worker severely injured his arm in an accident Monday morning at a steel plant west of downtown, a Fort Wayne fire official said.

The man’s arm became caught in a machine press at the Valbruna Slater Stainless plant at 2400 Taylor St., Deputy Chief Mark Nelson said.

“It was a very near amputation,” Nelson said. “He still may lose (his arm).”

Medics and firefighters were dispatched to the plant about 8:30 a.m. When they arrived, the man had been freed from the press, and his clothing was still tangled in the machinery, Nelson said. Authorities did not release the man’s name.

Valbruna Slater Stainless, a subsidiary of an Italian firm, makes steel bars for use in airplane landing gear, jet engines and other products. A phone message left for a company official was not returned Monday.
