Hamlet

FORT WAYNE – A 20-year-old Fort Wayne man was arrested Tuesday, charged on two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and three counts of criminal confinement in connection with a robbery at a north-side apartment complex.

Devonte M. Hamlet has been charged in connection with a robbery shortly after 10 p.m. Jan. 10 at 8709 Gulf Dr. in the Island Club apartment complex.

In two apartment-complex robberies that night on the city's north side, two men with guns forced their way into apartments, bound the victims' hands and stole valuables, police said for an earlier story.

In the first case, reported at 10:12 p.m., a woman told police she was followed into the Island Club unit, in the complex near Interstate 69 and East Wallen and Auburn roads, and that two men took her into her home at gunpoint.

The men tied the hands of the people in the apartment, including a toddler, police said. The robbers left with a TV, wallets and cell phones.

In a second home invasion, reported at 11:33 p.m., two men with handguns came into a unit at Cambridge Square Apartments, 7529 Cold Springs Blvd., near Coldwater and East Cook roads.

They bound the hands of three people and took several items, police said.

A victim who managed to free his hands grabbed a gun and fired at the robbers as they were leaving, police said. It was unclear whether either robber was shot , but at 11:35 p.m., police received a report that a shooting victim went to a hospital.

This is one of more than a dozen robbery investigations that have occurred recently in apartment communities. The Fort Wayne Police Department continues to investigate them. Police on Tuesday encouraged apartment residents "to remain vigilant."
