Tough day for Mastodons

Saturday was not a good day to be a Mastodon.

The men's and women's basketball teams, the men's tennis team and the men's volleyball team all suffered setbacks on Saturday.

The men's basketball team had a seven-game home winning streak broken in a 63-59 loss to UMKC. Frank Gaines led IPFW with 17 points.

The men will resume their schedule Thursday against Western Illinois at the Gates Center.

The women's basketball team also lost to UMKC, only this one was in Kansas City. It was the third consecutive loss for the Mastodons, who were led by Erin Murphy's 22 points.

IPFW will be home to Oakland on Saturday, which will be the first game of a men's-women's doubleheader at the Gates Center.

The volleyball team split its East Coast road trip with a 3-2 loss to New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J.

Eddie Rivera had 18 kills for the Mastodons (2-2), who return home Friday to face Lourdes.
