Purdue hires 6 assistant coaches

– Greg Hudson, who spent the previous three seasons as the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Florida State, was named Purdue’s defensive coordinator.

Hudson was one of six members of Darrell Hazell’s coaching staff announced Friday. Three – cornerbacks coach Jon Heacock, linebackers coach Marcus Freeman and running backs coach Jafar Williams – join Hazell from Kent State.

Wide receivers coach Kevin Sherman joins the team from Virginia Tech. Jim Bollman, who will coach the offensive line, spent last year as the offensive lines/running backs coach at Boston College and the previous 11 seasons as the offensive coordinator/offensive lines coach at Ohio State.

With Hudson’s help, Florida State went from 108th in total defense the year before his arrival to No. 2 in the category in 2012.

“Greg brings a high level of energy and expertise to our defense. He is an extremely bright coach that proven the ability to stop multiple offensive schemes in a number of the top conferences,” Hazell said in a statement. “His passion for improvement, wealth of football knowledge and vast recruiting skills to bring in top talent makes him a great fit for our staff at Purdue.”

Purdue also named Tommy Cook the supervisor of football operations and Doug Davis as the head strength and conditioning coach. Cook and Davis held those positions at Kent State. Casey Nuss, Purdue’s supervisor for football operations the previous three seasons, will move into a role that works with developing high school relations.
