IPFW hot for a while, cold down the stretch

With 7:03 remaining in the game, IPFW freshman scored on the first of what would be back-to-back three-point plays.

In less than a two-minute span, the Mastodons scored 11 points to take a 58-56 lead with 5:16 remaining.

The Mastodons would get one more point and wound up losing 63-59 to UMKC on Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.

Two things contributed to the loss: IPFW couldn't stop UMKC from scoring, and the Mastodons went 1-of-7 from the free throw line over the last five minutes.

Now IPFW (9-12, 2-5 Summit League) finds itself in a pickle. It switched spots with UMKC, falling to eighth place in the Summit League, with second-place Western Illinois coming to the Gates Center on Thursday.

UMKC, remember, came into the game having lost 10 of its last 11 outings, while IPFW had yet to lose at home in seven games.

Frank Gaines had 17 points for IPFW. Mario Hines had 13 points, but one rebound. Michael Kibiloski had 10 points.
