Canterbury wins clash of champions

It was a meeting of defending state champions, with the Class A winner coming out on top Saturday.

Canterbury, which claimed the Class A title last season and is the No. 1 team this year, defeated defending Class 3A winner Concordia 50-45 at Canterbury.

Sophomore guard Darby Maggard led the Cavaliers (13-2) with 25 points, which included going 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Kindell Fincher added 18 points and 14 rebounds for Canterbury.

Tenth-ranked Concordia (10-5), which led 19-13 at the half, was led by Courtney Smith’s 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Girls basketball

CARROLL 65, NEW HAVEN 32: Visiting Carroll took a 28-7 halftime lead and cruised past the Bulldogs. Amy Poynter led the Chargers with 15 points. It was the 200th career win for Carroll coach Mark Redding.

EAST NOBLE 53, DEKALB 52: Hayley Martin’s 30 points weren’t enough for the visiting Barons. Kerri Shrock led East Noble with 17 points.

ANGOLA 69, WEST NOBLE 58: Rachel Rinehart scored 25 points to pace Angola to the NECC title at Westview. Ericka Rinehart added 13 points for the Hornets. Kelsie Peterson paced West Noble with 19 points.

Boys basketball

INDIANAPOLIS BROAD RIPPLE 56, SOUTH SIDE 39: Visiting Broad Ripple jumped out to a 21-5 first-quarter lead to defeat the Archers. Domonique Gleason led South Side with 11 points.

BISHOP LUERS 81, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 73: James Blackmon Jr. scored 36 points and Vijay Blackmon added 16 in the Knights’ win at Blackhawk. The Braves had five players in double figures, led by Joey Morlan’s 16 points and 15 from Nathan Targgart.


CONCORDIA INVITATIONAL: Carroll had five individual champions and three runners-up to score 294 points in the annual tournament at Concordia. Ben Cauffman (106 pounds), Kobe Raypole (113), Josh Garman (138), Spencer Malcolm (160) and Riley Lefever (170) won titles for the Chargers. Snider was second with 211 points.

Other area individual winners were Erique Early, Snider (120); Bobby Humphrey, Snider (126); Tanner Shipley, Huntington North (132); Kyle Jolas, Huntington North (145); and Ruben Holcomb, Snider (285).


SAC MEET: At the Helen P. Brown Natatorium, Snider won both the boys and girls events. The Panthers boys rolled up 350 points. Concordia was second with 252 and Bishop Dwenger was third with 232. The Snider girls amassed 404 points, while Dwenger had 291 and Concordia, 232.
