Context of Ohio school’s Jesus portrait under review

JACKSON, Ohio – A southern Ohio school district plans to continue displaying a large portrait of Jesus at a middle school while the display’s context is investigated by a nonprofit legal group that advocates for religious liberty.

The American Civil Liberties Union and another activist group have challenged the display of the portrait, which has been at a school in Jackson since 1947. The ACLU says the portrait is unconstitutional, promoting one religion instead of separation of church and state.

The nonprofit Liberty Institute said Friday it is representing the Jackson schools on the issue on a pro bono basis. It says attorneys will review the display’s history and purpose and make a recommendation to the district, which could decide whether to remove the picture.

Jackson is about 65 miles south of Columbus.
