At about 8:30 a.m., state police at Fort Wayne said, a car driven by Melissa A. Mills, 33, of Fort Wayne, collided head-on with an SUV driven by Ashley L. Crow, 28, of St. Joe.

The crash occurred in a curve on Indiana 1, just north of the county line, police said.

Ryan K. Turner, 45, a front-seat passenger in Mills' vehicle, died at the scene, police said. He was wearing a seat belt.

Alyana Mills, 13, a back-seat passenger in Mills' vehicle, was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition, police said. It was not known whether she was wearing a seat belt.

They said Melissa Mills and Crow were taken to a Fort Wayne hospital, where their conditions were not immediately known.

State police crash reconstructionists assisted with the investigation, and their findings are pending, police said.

They said Indiana 1 between the county line and DeKalb County Road 68 was closed for about four hours during the investigation and cleanup.

DeKalb County EMS and firefighters from Spencerville, Concord Township and Garrett assisted, police said.
