Winona Lake woman charged with neglecting toddler

Bartley

A Winona Lake woman has been charged with neglecting a 2-year-old girl in her care who suffered a broken skull, the Kosciusko County sheriff's department said today.

Karen M. Bartley, 35, was being held at the Kosciusko County Jail without bond, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

On Dec. 18, the girl was brought to Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw by her father and Bartley, his fiancee, the statement said.

It said the girl was transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, where it was determined she had fractured her skull.

Bartley first said that while she was watching the girl, the girl had thrown a temper tantrum and repeatedly struck the back of her head on the floor, the statement said.

It said medical officials told detectives the girl's injuries "were not conducive" to the actions Bartley said had occurred. During interviews with detectives, the statement said, Bartley said she had been playing with the child that day and had become "overly aggressive."
