Fly like ... an Eagle?

So what could Brian Kelly possibly see in the Philadelphia Eagles?

I think I know.

I think Kelly sees a chunkier paycheck signed by the University of Notre Dame.

I think -- and if I'm dead wrong, it wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last -- that he's playing the time-worn leverage game to milk more dough out of his current employer, because it's hard to see this thing with the Eagles as more than a dalliance.

Philly is one raging Dumpster fire of a franchise right now -- a team that started 3-1 this past season and finished 1-11, and that has either a beat-up, down-trending Michael Vick or coat-holder Nick Foles to choose from at quarterback. And as the talking heads continually remind us, the NFL is a quarterback-driven league now.

So, Kelly-to-Philly would seem to be a career path that takes him where it took Steve Spurrier, which is right back to the college game after a couple of embarrassing years. He'd really leave an ascendant Notre Dame for that sort of cul-de-sac detour?

Sure, it's the NFL, and sooner or later the Kellys of the world want to take their swings at it. But the Eagles wouldn't appear to offer an optimum chance to do that.

And given the NFL track record of high-profile college guys -- with the exception of Jim Harbaugh, name one who wasn't a pro guy to start with (i.e., Pete Carroll) who's ever pulled it off -- it doesn't seem likely this would be a solid career move for Kelly at this point.

So, yeah. I think he's just trying to lift Notre Dame's wallet here.

But we'll see.
