Irish freshman earns honor

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Notre Dame cornerback KeiVarae Russell was named to the Football Writers Association of America's freshman All-American first team Monday.

Russell, who was thrust into the starting lineup after junior Lo Wood suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in fall camp, had 50 tackles and two interceptions during the regular season.

Russell will be defending another freshman first-team All-American in tonight's BCS championship game when No. 1 Notre Dame (12-0) plays No. 2 Alabama (12-1) in Sun Life Stadium. Alabama receiver Amari Cooper was also named to the freshman first team.

Cooper had a team-high 53 receptions for 895 yards and nine touchdowns for the Crimson Tide.
