Area man arrested in stabbing in Tennessee

Heroy

A New Haven man was jailed after police in Tennessee found his girlfriend from Fort Wayne nearly stabbed to death in a motel on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

James E. Heroy III, 20, faces an attempted second-degree murder charge, according to Assistant Chief Gary Waldroup of the Gatlinburg, Tenn., Police Department.

On Thursday, the department responded to a possible stabbing at the Hillside Motel in eastern Tennessee. Officers found Heroy’s girlfriend, Amber L. Leslie, 22, suffering from several stab wounds, Waldroup said.

Leslie was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and was listed in critical condition, Waldroup said. On Saturday, she was released from the hospital, said the manager of Hillside Motel, who asked to remain anonymous.

The manager said that before the stabbing, the couple had lived at the motel for about three months without any visits from police. Why the couple was in Tennessee is not clear. Police did not release any other information.

According to Indiana court records, Heroy is wanted in Allen County on a felony charge of failing to stop after an accident resulting in injury.

On March 10 in Fort Wayne, Heroy was driving east in the 3400 block of Taylor Street, near Freeman Street. He crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with another car, court papers stated.

The other driver broke her leg in the crash, and Heroy fled the scene on foot, court papers said.

Heroy was being held Saturday at the Sevier County Jail in lieu of $350,000 bail.
