Notebook: Fort Wayne flavor in Big Ten battle

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Two Fort Wayne natives saw action in Saturday's 84-61 Michigan State victory against Purdue.

Rapheal Davis had three points and four rebounds in 18 minutes for the Boilermakers.

Russell Byrd finished with three assists and two rebounds in nine minutes for the Spartans.

Byrd, a co-captain, came into the game averaging 2.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in 10.5 minutes for the Spartans.

Davis came into the game averaging 4.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.2 minutes for the Boilermakers.

On the move

Purdue had trouble slowing down Michigan State in transition. The Spartans had 16 fastbreak points to Purdue's six.

"We wanted to try to limit their touches inside on the halfcourt set, sometimes we did and sometimes we didn't, but they did a good job of getting in transition," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "Sometimes off of a tough shot or long rebound, or one of our turnovers, we just allowed way too many looks."

Learning experience

Purdue freshman forward A.J. Hammons took a lot away from his first Big Ten road game.

"Be ready at all times," Hammons said. "Bring your "A" game. "

Hammons had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Boilermakers.
