Defense bill lets 122nd keep its Thunderbolts

Fort Wayne’s 122nd Fighter Wing will continue to maintain and fly the A-10C Thunderbolt II, after President Obama this week signed the National Defense Authorization Act, according to a statement from the fighter wing.

Obama signed the act Wednesday, allowing the local Air National Guard unit to keep and continue flying the twin-engine, straight-wing fighter.

In February, the Air Force announced plans to convert to 122nd Fighter Wing from an A-10C unit into an MC-12 unit under the 2013 budget, the release said.

The 122nd has received support from the community, local and state congressional representatives, and senate and local government representatives since the Air Force announcement, according to the release.
