A hated rival retires

The player that Komets fans loved to hate -- perhaps more than any other player in franchise history -- has retired.

Goaltender Larry Sterling, who played against the Komets with Port Huron and Dayton, announced his retirement so he can pursue another career.

He had been in the CHL with Fort Worth this season.

He is best known in Fort Wayne for being in net for Port Huron in the 2008 IHL Finals, when the Komets came back from a 3-1 series deficit to win in triple overtime of Game 7.

The fans at Memorial Coliseum just loved to chant "Larry, Larry," whenever he was in the building.

"Thanks to the Fort Wayne fans," Sterling wrote on Facebook. "You made my last five years so much fun every time I came into the Coliseum."
