Gaines getting help

A month ago, I'm not sure IPFW would have won Wednesday's game against Navy.

The Mastodons took a 68-63 victory over the Midshipmen at the Gates Center, getting 22 points from Luis Jacobo, 17 from Frank Gaines and 15 from Joe Edwards.

It wasn't exactly Gaines' best shooting night, as he went 4 of 13 from the floor.

Earlier in the season, that might have spelled disaster for IPFW, but Jacobo and Edwards have developed into scoring threats who can carry the team for 4- or 6-minute stretches.

Jacobo went 8 of 14 from the floor, including 5 of 9 from three-point range, and Edwards was 6 of 9 from the floor.

Both seem more comfortable with their roles as scorers, and both are playing under control a little better than they were earlier this season, particularly Jacobo.

IPFW returns to Summit League play Saturday, when it faces Omaha at 2 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
