LAPORTE – A northern Indiana lake association has applied for a $66,800 grant to help remove a fast-growing invasive aquatic plant that crowds out native species, snarls motorboat propellers and poses a hazard to swimmers.

The LaPorte Area Lake Association applied for state money to remove the Eurasian Water Milfoil from Pine Lake.

If the state awards the Lake and River Enhancement grant, it would cover 80 percent of the cost. The association would have to pay $16,700.

Association President Don Bowman told the LaPorte County Herald-Argus (http://bit.ly/UyY2Fe) the invasive plant will hamper, if not eliminate, activity on the lake.

The association’s weed control committee chairman, Daniel Balich, said the problem needs to be dealt with before April, or it will get more expensive and more difficult to treat.
