New leader for NAACP

The Rev. Saharra Bledsoe has been elected president of the Fort Wayne/Allen County NAACP in a repeat election Saturday.

An earlier election was conducted in November, but Michael Latham, a lifetime member of the NAACP, complained to the national NAACP that proper procedures were not followed and that not all members of the local NAACP were notified of the election.

The national NAACP organized a new election, and the president of the state NAACP oversaw the election.

Of the organization’s 260 members, 49 voted. Bledsoe received 23 votes for president.

The NAACP’s former president, Paulette Nellems, resigned her position as president the week before the new election, but her name remained on the ballot.
